A City That Makes Headlines

Elliot Lake has been in the national spotlight multiple times — from the 1974 uranium miners' wildcat strike that led to Canada's Occupational Health and Safety Act, to the tragic 2012 Algo Centre Mall collapse, to winning Kraft Hockeyville 2024. The city is served by the Elliot Lake Standard (Postmedia), Elliot Lake Today (Village Media network), and the North Shore Bulletin. Current mayor Andrew Wannan leads city council after the removal of Chris Patrie in 2023 for municipal conflict of interest violations. Learn more through our community updates.

Today, Elliot Lake is home to 11,372 residents, surrounded by dense forest, muskeg swamps, numerous lakes, and hills of Precambrian bedrock on the Canadian Shield. The traditional territory of the Anishnaabeg of the Robinson-Huron Treaty — Serpent River, Mississauga, and Sagamok First Nations — the city continues to honour this heritage.
